Understanding MeRT for Autism
What is MeRT treatment?
MeRT, or Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, is a gentle, individualized treatment that uses brain mapping and magnetic stimulation to support healthy brain communication. It begins with an EEG and EKG to evaluate brainwave patterns and develop a tailored treatment plan using TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation).
How is MeRT different from standard TMS treatment?
Standard TMS uses the same stimulation protocol for all patients, while MeRT is guided by each person’s unique brain activity. We can then deliver magnetic pulses to those precisely designated areas, based on real-time data, to stimulate underactive or dysregulated brain regions.
Is MeRT safe for children with autism?
Yes, MeRT is safe and noninvasive. It doesn’t require medication or anesthesia, and sessions are quick and painless. Our clinical team closely monitors each child and makes adjustments as needed to ensure their comfort and safety throughout the treatment process.
What ages can receive MeRT treatment?
We’ve worked with children of various ages, from toddlers to teens. We typically recommend treatment for children who can tolerate sitting still for brief periods. Our team can help determine if your child is a suitable candidate based on their age and developmental needs.

Autism Treatment Process
What happens during the initial evaluation?
The first step is a consultation with our team, where we review your child’s medical and developmental history and answer your questions. If MeRT seems like a good fit, we’ll schedule an EEG and EKG to analyze brain function and begin crafting a personalized treatment plan.
How long does the treatment take?
A standard MeRT treatment course lasts 4 to 6 weeks, with sessions five days a week. Each appointment typically lasts 30 to 45 minutes. We reassess progress mid-treatment and adjust protocols if needed.
What does a MeRT session feel like?
Most children feel only a light tapping sensation on the scalp during MeRT. The treatment is painless and well tolerated, and there’s no downtime required afterward.
Can I stay with my child during sessions?
Yes, absolutely. Parents are welcome to remain with their child throughout the session to provide comfort and reassurance.
Do we have to stop other therapies while doing MeRT?
No. In fact, many families continue speech therapy, ABA, occupational therapy, or other supports alongside MeRT. Because MeRT may improve attention, regulation, and processing, some parents report that other therapies become more effective during and after treatment.

What to Expect
When will we start seeing changes?
Some children begin to show improvements within the first few weeks of treatment, while others may take longer. Progress is gradual and varies by child, but we closely monitor changes and provide updates throughout the process.
What kinds of improvements are possible?
While every child is different, parents often report improvements in areas such as:
- Eye contact
- Verbal expression
- Emotional regulation
- Sleep quality
- Social interaction
Even small changes can significantly impact your child’s quality of life.
Are the effects permanent?
Many families find that the benefits of MeRT are long-lasting, especially when followed by ongoing developmental therapies. Some children may benefit from future “maintenance” sessions, but this depends on the individual.
What if we need to stop treatment early?
We understand that situations change. If you need to pause or stop treatment, we’ll guide you through the next steps. Any improvement your child experiences during treatment can still be meaningful, even if the full protocol isn’t completed.

Cost & Insurance
Does insurance cover MeRT for autism?
Unfortunately, we do not accept insurance nor file it on your behalf.
For conditions other than Major Depressive Disorder and OCD (which are FDA-cleared), insurance rarely reimburses any of the costs associated with treatment.
However, we can provide CPT codes and a billing breakdown you may submit to your insurance to see if any part of the treatment may be covered.
What is the cost if insurance doesn’t cover it?
We’ll review the full cost of treatment during your consultation so you can make an informed decision. Pricing is based on the number of sessions, EEG testing, and ongoing care.
Do you offer payment plans?
We do not offer in-house financing, but many families use credit cards, HSA/FSA funds, or CareCredit if available. We’re happy to work with you to explore your payment options.
